IU Health La Porte Hospital, related entities, award $42,000

6/22/2015 - Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital, the La Porte Hospital Foundation and the La Porte Hospital Auxiliary awarded 38 students a total of $42,000 in scholarships and loans in support of the organizations' commitment to encouraging local students to pursue careers in healthcare. Recipients and their families attended an award program June 9 at IU Health La Porte Hospital.
"Since 1983, we have provided 990 scholarship and awards totaling more than $1.796 million to students pursuing careers in health science occupations. Through these scholarships, area students are encouraged to pursue health careers, and our IU Health colleagues are encourage to go to the next level of education," said G. Thor Thordarson, president and CEO of IU Health La Porte Hospital. "One of our priorities at IU Health La Porte and Starke hospitals is to attract and retain the best people to deliver healthcare and all the related services around it. We are extremely pleased to present these awards today, and we know these students will go on to accomplish great things toward improving health in our communities."
Award recipients ranged from new grads seeking to enter the healthcare field in biology, dentistry, nursing, medical school, and other areas, to long-time IU Health colleagues pursuing higher education in nursing, physical therapy and other fields.
Robert Burns, on behalf of the Auxiliary scholarship committee, presented 20 students with scholarships totaling $14,000. Award winners were: Christine Ake, Moriah Carmel, Lindsay Haga, Bailey Harrington, Hannah Howell, Anna Johnson, Hunger Moldenhauer, Olivia Neese, Erin O'Laughlin, Annabelle Papai, Johnna Belkiewitz, Kayla Killingbeck, Joshua Noll, Danielle Szymkowski, and Hannah Walters. Laura Sosinski received the Harold and Marcy Bowen Scholarship, and Kyleigh Werner received the Friend of the Auxiliary scholarship.
Katrina Langford, on behalf of the La Porte Hospital Foundation scholarship committee, presented 20 students with scholarships totaling $25,000. Award winners were: Janeen Arnett, Rebecca Ehrick, Suzanne Hanna and Hannah Keener for the Magnuson Scholarship; Angela Banks, Jennifer Coffeen, Rabion Frasure, Whitney Hart, Michal Krol, Kristin Lestinsky, Gabriela Mazur, Izabela Mazur, Evan Schmidt, Gina Schrader and Kayla Wurster for Foundation Scholarships; Stephanie Van Sickle for the Elizabeth and Eugene Siefker Scholarship; Lane Van Sickle for the Richard M. Sisson Scholarship; Jordann Frasure for the Walter Hrankaj Scholarship; and Martin Garcia and Ashley Lagunas for the Foundation Bilingual Award.
Debi Baughman and Craig Felty, on behalf of IU Health La Porte Hospital, presented Dee Ann Keehn with the hospital's Critical Occupation Award, which allows for up to $10,000 in funding toward her education.
