Acclaimed La Porte High School Mixed Chorale to Feature Student-prepared Ensembles at First Friday
1/30/2017
La Porte, Ind. – The La Porte High School Mixed Chorale - one of the school’s six choral groups – will perform ensembles primarily prepared by the students themselves at the next First Friday in the Chapel, at noon, Feb. 3, in the La Porte Hospital Family Chapel, 1007 Lincolnway, La Porte. The program is free and open to the public, and attendees may bring a lunch. The program will include ensembles that were prepared for the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble Contest taking place the following day, and four ensembles introduced by their group leader.
The La Porte High School Mixed Chorale has been under the direction of Thomas Coe for 17 years. They are accompanied by Jane DeVries. This select group of advanced singers - sophomores through seniors - performs several times throughout the year in concert and contest situations. The choir consistently receives superior ratings at ISSMA contests in both performance and sight-reading, and has been a State Finalist numerous times.
Coe has been the choral director at La Porte High School since 1999. Previously he taught choir and general music in the Valparaiso, Duneland, and Penn-Harris-Madison school corporations. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Indiana University and a Master of Music from Ball State University. Coe has been a member of the South Shore Choral Artists and South Bend Chamber Singers, as well as the American Choral Director's Association and the Indiana Music Educator’s Association. Originally from the Sound Bend area, Coe attended high school In Valparaiso where his parents still live. He and his wife, Robin, reside happily in their 115-year-old home in La Porte with their three cats.
