Welcome to La Porte’s New Community Hospital
Q: When did the new hospital open?
A: lt opened on Saturday, October 24 at 6 a.m. It is located at 1331 State Street.
This site has many advantages, including its central location, visibility, area to expand, proximity to EMS and convenient access points. It is visible from Lincolnway.
Q: Why did you rebuild instead of remodel the old hospital?
A: La Porte Hospital was an aging facility. While the structure itself was solid, the infrastructure (plumbing, electrical, etc.) was in need of replacement which likely would require closing the hospital to complete. In addition, early estimates showed it would be nearly as expensive to remodel as to rebuild.
Q: How many beds does the new hospital have?
A: The new hospital has 84 beds for inpatients plus two additional triage rooms and a two bay holding nursery on the maternity unit. Factors we considered while determining the number of beds for the new hospital include population growth, advancements in medical treatments and technology and the movement of an increasing number of services to outpatient care. Northwest Health - La Porte has an average of 50 patients staying in the hospital each night, and we wanted the new hospital to accommodate more patients.
Q: What will happen to the old La Porte Hospital?
A: The new hospital replaced the old facility. Five departments will remain until our new medical office building opens in 2021: sleep lab, wound center, infusion center and two physician offices.
We have also preserved the legacy of the old hospital by finding ways to memorialize the special items that were donated to the hospital so they can continue to be cherished and celebrated in the community.
If the facility cannot be used in the future, we will bring it down.
Q: What services are provided at the new hospital?
A: We built a full-service acute-care community hospital. That includes – but is not limited to - inpatient service, including emergency services, inpatient and outpatient surgery, cardiovascular services in a heart center setting, critical care,
orthopedic services, birthing & family care services, and others, in addition to all of the ancillary support services for these service lines.
Q: Will the new hospital help to recruit more physicians to the area?
A: Yes, having a new hospital with advanced technology will help continue to attract highly trained doctors and specialists to the area.
Q: What does the new hospital look like?
A: Architectural features of the new hospital include a mix of traditional brick and stone, and enormous windows - reflecting both the human scale, and the natural features of La Porte's lake-rich community of blues, greens, and dune grasses. The windows are high performance, low-e glass, which minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light without compromising the amount of ambient light in the building. lt also contributes to overall energy efficiency, and windows placed throughout the facility maximize daylight in patient care areas. The building is supported by a steel frame supplied by regional steel mills. Sustainability is top of mind for designers as well, with design features giving the hospital the ability to pursue Green Globes certification.
